GSCL First High School Comp May 2010
Whoooo! Hooooooooooo! Looks like we are going to have a fierce competition this year!
It was wonderful to see the kids connect again -
Points were allocated as per Brett's Nicolson’s last year system, that way everyone is ranked. - see below for results.
Basically, the climber with the lowest points is the winner. If you are first, you get 0 points, 2nd - 20 points etc. From position 12 - 21 it goes up in twos and thereafter by 1, i.e. position 21 - 90 points, 22 - 91 points. This gives kids a sense of achievement as well as something back, as they and their supporters can see how well they are doing.
The comps went well, but we had to rely on some of the kids belaying and scoring as parents were scarce as were belayers! We maybe need to rethink the comps starting at 3:30 as "lead" belayers can't be there at that time.
Route 1 - set for girls only - under 15 & 17 - Brilliant - all the girls loved it as it was very technical & balancy!
Route 2 - problem route - under 15 boys & all girls - no one got to the chains, but the smallest, skinniest climber got the furthest - go figure!
Route 3 - combination route - technical & pumpy - under 15 boys and all girls - 3 boys and 1 girl made it to the chains - great!
Route 4 - combination route - under 15 & 17 boys & under 19 girls - 5 climbers topped out (all under 17 boys) - we had 36 climbers on this route - good.
Route 5 - highly technical - under 17 & under 19 boys - no one topped - too technical, too hard, but they loved it.
Route 6 - awesome route - under 17 & under 19 boys - no one topped - but the under 19 boys did way better - it was set for them.
Route 7 - off the charts! Under 19 boys - just not even there!
The feedback from the girls has been that they loved having their own climb but still want to compete against the boys, so the Girls only route was a hit, especially as some of the boys tried it afterwards and just couldn't do it at all! The take here is that we set a girls only climb in every comp from here onward. The under 15 & 17 boys also loved their climbs, under 19's - frustrated, but seriously keen to do it all again.
Thanks to Paul Blokker & Chris Bester for belaying on Saturday and huge thanks to Wonderwall for hosting. Routesetters; Debbie Mulder, Peter Widlake, Lazzie Modau, Greg de Grits, Wesley Black & Alex Bester - routes were awesome! Thanks guys - we couldn't have done it without you. Caryn - well, do we need to go there? ;-) - have you got your voice back yet? Thanks Caryn! Tam got stuck in too - thanks Tam and soon to be baby :-) Next comp at The Barn in Pretoria.
